Position Open: Academic Program Coordinator, USKI

Founded in 1943 and a Johns Hopkins division since 1950, The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) has been educating global leaders for over 60 years. As a highly selective graduate institution with a distinguished faculty, SAIS consistently ranks as one of the top schools of international relations in the world. SAIS was founded to provide a practical approach to training students in international leadership and foreign relations, and to provide mid-career educational opportunities for those already working in related fields. Today, SAIS offers the M.A., M.I.P.P., and Ph.D. degrees and enrolls 580 full-time students on the Washington, DC campus, 190 students at the SAIS Center in Bologna, Italy, and 180 students at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing, China.

Currently, we are seeking an academic program coordinator to provide programmatic and outreach support for the U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS including. He/she will also serve as liaison and point person between SAIS and the Institute and develop and oversee programming for the Korea Studies program at SAIS.

The Position:

The Academic Program Coordinator will play a critical role in programming for both the U.S.-Korea Institute and Korea Studies program.  For the Institute, this position will work closely with the USKI team to implement public and private outreach initiatives including, but not limited to: organizing logistical matters, providing on-site management, coordinating with IT/facilities, as well as providing support to international delegations involved in any such events. S/he will also provide support to USKI programs, such as the three-year energy research project.   Other duties will include oversight of the Visiting Scholars program, working with the various departments to ensure international Visiting Scholars receive the proper visas and documentation, and working with them once they arrive to navigate through SAIS/JHU administrative systems, to enroll in classes, and to receive support and assistance as necessary.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Korea Studies to plan a repertoire of events and activities geared towards supplementing the Korea Studies curriculum. This includes, but is not limited to, monthly Korea Studies luncheons for solely Korea Studies students, regular brown bag luncheons open SAIS-wide, and other events related to the program.  S/he will offer program support to the Director of Korea Studies in terms of coordinating course scheduling, collecting evaluations, coordinating syllabi with SAIS library, monitoring student progress, updating the Korea Studies website, and preparing yearly grant reporting, as well as provide logistical support to all Korea Studies adjunct faculty.

The Academic Program Coordinator will also work directly with Korea Studies students to help monitor their performance, answer questions related to academic requirements/classes/schedules/programming, as well as field questions from prospective students. S/he will be a go-to resource for anything related to Korea Studies at SAIS. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, History, Asian Studies or relevant field.  Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. (Master’s degree strongly preferred.)
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
  • 1-3 years in a professional work environment (experience can be substituted by a Masters degree)
  • 1-2 years experience with event and/or project management

Desired:

  • Internship or work experience in a Korean institution (not including teaching for a hagwon)
  • Budget management and/or accounting experience
  • Grant administration experience
  • Web editing experience using WordPress or other web-based content management systems
  • Desktop publishing experience, including a familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to draft memos and basic business letters
  • Superior interpersonal, analytical, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and a meticulous eye for detail
  • Have exceptional initiative and judgment
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, administration, scholars and visitors
  • Proficiency in basic business software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher); willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed
  • Solid understanding of Korean business culture and willingness to provide support to Korean delegations and visitors
  • Korean language proficiency strongly preferred
