Marc Janke reports on the economic viability of the North Korean Special Economic Zones, including the two most recently opened SEZs in Rason and Hwanggeumpyeong in June 2011. He presents evidence and data that suggest these SEZs can be both successful and unsuccessful and gives an analysis of the data to predict on the future viability of these economic ventures.

Marc Janke is a second-year M.A. student at SAIS, concentrating in China Studies and International Finance. After graduating from Harvard in 2009, he worked in Xi’an, China for a criminal law NGO and other organizations such an environmental research group and an intellectual property firm. He speaks Mandarin and Japanese, and is especially interested in the issue of Chinese investment in North Korea.
