The US-Korea Institute and Southeast Asia Studies Program at SAIS invite you to the official book launch and reception for:
INCOMPLETE DEMOCRACIES IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC: Evidence from Indonesia, Korea, the Philippines and Thailand
This book presents a nuanced and varied picture of the state of democracy in four Asian countries using the findings from a pioneering study, the Asia Democracy Initiative, to explore the role of ordinary people in democratization through the rise of expressive social values.
The chapters in the book show how and why factors such as the emergence of the middle class, civil society organizations or non-electoral participation, do not seem to play the role that democratic theory suggests. The findings from Indonesia, Korea, the Philippines and Thailand, reveal how unique the region’s paths to democracy are, in comparison to other regions, and particularly those of western liberal democracies, but also that substantial progress is needed before electoral democracies become fully consolidated across Asia.
Join us for the official book launch of this new volume, featuring a discussion with the editors Giovanna Maria Dora Dore, Visiting Scholar, SAIS, Jae H. Ku, Director of the U.S.-Korea Institute, SAIS, and Karl D. Jackson, Director of Asian Studies and the C.V. Starr Distinguished Professor of Southeast Asia Studies, SAIS.
Introductory remarks by Vali Nasr, Dean, SAIS and moderated by Kurt Campbell, Chairman and CEO, The Asia Group.
