Johns Hopkins SAIS Appoints Ambassador Robert L. Gallucci as Chairman of the US-Korea Institute

The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) has appointed Ambassador Robert L. Gallucci as Chairman of the US-Korea Institute (USKI).

“We are ecstatic to have Ambassador Gallucci as our next chairman US-Korea Institute Director Jae Ku said. “He is a renowned expert of Korean affairs and diplomacy, whose career path has traversed academia, public service, and philanthropy. Ambassador Gallucci is simply a doer who combines intellect with the passion to bring about peace. The US-Korea Institute is honored have him as our next chairman.”

Ambassador Gallucci is currently a Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. He has served as U.S. Ambassador-at-Large and Special Envoy for the U.S. Department of State, where he addressed threats posed by the proliferation of ballistic missiles and weapons of mass destruction. He was also chief U.S. negotiator during the North Korean nuclear crisis of 1994. Ambassador Gallucci has served as Assistant Secretary of State for Political Military Affairs and as Deputy Executive Chairman of the UN Special Commission, where he oversaw the disarmament of Iraq following the first Gulf War.

Following more than two decades of public service in various government positions, Ambassador Gallucci served as dean of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University for 13 years until 2009. He later became president of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, one of the nation’s largest independent foundations.

“I am pleased and honored to join USKI as Chairman,” Ambassador Gallucci said. “I have been involved with Johns Hopkins SAIS for more than 40 years since I completed a post-doctoral fellowship there, went on to teach as an adjunct, and most recently chaired an external review of the program for the University. My involvement in Korean affairs spans decades as well, first from my position in government and then from an academic post. I am truly looking forward to working with the expert and talented staff and research fellows of the Institute.”

The US-Korea Institute will host a reception in celebration of Ambassador Gallucci’s appointment and launch of the redesigned websites for both USKI and 38 North, the institute’s signature online journal offering analysis of events in and around North Korea.

The reception will be held today, June 7, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Johns Hopkins SAIS, Kenney-Herter Auditorium, 1740 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, DC 20036. Media who wish to attend should RSVP through the online registration form.
